Me and my friends have been taking video on our camera's and want to find a good editing program to use. Free would be nice but it doesn't matter. Maybe one that imports the video. We mostly have mini dv cameras.

Windows Movie Maker is okay. Pinaccle Studio is better because it has more options.

It really depends... by far the best machine for video editing would be a Mac computer and they come with iMovie which is generally considered the most powerful, easy to use editing software available in its price range (free to $60 or so). Importing is absurdly easy (plug camera in and press "import" - it automatically separates the video into pieces based on whenever you turn the camera on and off), it effortlessly handles HD quality content, and a child can use it.

Professional applications such as Final Cut Studio ($1300+ though) are fantastic, but very complicated and involved (it's a Pro app for a reason!) for amateur use. TV shows and some movies are often done in Final Cut. If one of your friends has a Mac that would be a good place to start though.

If you're on a PC there is Windows Movie Maker that should come with it... it sucks but it can do basic stuff (albeit slowly). There is also the Adobe Premiere suite for PC which costs over $600 I think and works moderately well.

Whether you use Windows or MacOSX, they both come packaged with decent video editors for home use. iMovie for the Mac really does a great job. If you're using Windows XP, you can use WIndows Movie Maker 2. It comes packaged with most newer Windows PC's, but if you don't have it, just google it and download it for free.
