I wouldn't suggest mixing any type of birds in a cage. Same-species caging is always safest, because you never know what one species may do to the other in terms of damage. Budgies are built hardier and a bit bigger, while canaries are dainty and small. Should any of the birds get the slightest bit territorial, say if your household suggests it's mating season (daylight or food trigger) or one of the species does something that bothers the other, a fight could break out and ultimately, I think the budgie would be the winner, but both could do substantial damage to each other.

Unless you have a huge aviary (http://aussiecagesandaviaries.com/images/bird-cat%20-aviary%20(2).jpg ), I wouldn't mix them. In a regular cage, and especially when you can't be around to supervise their reactions to one another, they don't have anywhere to go to be far away from the other species when they want.

I also think they have a variation of dietary needs where they shouldn't really be fed the same food. (Budgies are hookbills and that entire category has a line of food dedicated to it, canaries are not in the hookbill family.)

I wouldn't. I have heard of cases where they are caged together, but there is too much of a chance of a budgie biting and seriously injuring a canary that I wouldn't risk it.

i wouldn't i tried budgies with cockatiels once the budgies can be bullies. the cockatiels stopped eating etc. i separated them as soon as i realised.also i worked in a pet shop and used to hear more or less the same stories.it wouldn't be fair on the canaries

I wouldn't do that. The budgies can hurt the canaries. Budgies have hook bills and canaries don't so they wouldn't be able to protect themselves.

no. The budgie is a much more aggressive and boisterous bird and can cause serious harm to the canary, sometimes fatal.

Generally no, but there is always going to be an exception to the rule. Would it be possible to split the cage so you could have both, or as Pauline has said just get two cages.

Yes I did it, just watch them for pecking and bullying, why not 2 seperate cages side by side until they get to know each other.

You can put them together, but it's not recommended. I wouldn't do it. You should put them in separate cages.
