I think I have now decided that an Eclectus would be the best parrot for me. Thanks for all the input! Now, I just need to decide between male and female. I have read that females can be more nippy but I know all birds will be different. What differences have you experienced between the males and females. Is the talking ability different? Does one bond better with their owner? Any known problems with either sex?

Males are typically easier to get along with. Of all the eclectus's I know, all but one of the best talkers are boys. Elmo, who is ridiculously funny is a female and she talks better than some Macaws I know.

With the males, I don't really know of any bad things to tell you. I mean, I've never met a male eclectus with a bad disposition, and I've met hundreds of them. Most are readily able to learn tricks, genuinely like to please their mommies (and daddies) and have great personalities.

The females...I wouldn't say I've met any truly evil females either, but I have met some that took longer than usual to warm up to their owners. They are strikingly beautiful, and from what I've seen, when they reach their sexual peak, that's when some of the nipping issues and attitude changes begin.

I hope that you enjoy your baby! I'm so glad for you! I hope you'll figure out a way to show us pictures when you bring him or her home!

It is almost a guarantee a pair will mate if housed together. You will have to keep them in separate cages to prevent this happening. you can have a pair in the house. You cannot put them in the same cage though. Girls are not so much dominant, they're more a 'boss' but this does not happen to all females. There are female eclectus owners who's females are amazing as pets. There are also many owners of pairs & both can be equally as good. I have members in my eclectus forum who have females & who have pairs.
