Many studies have proven the safety of aspartame for all healthy populations (children included).

Here is an excerpt from one article which reviewed all previous studies (published in regulatory toxicology and pharmacology in 2002):
"The safety testing of aspartame has gone well beyond that required to evaluate the safety of a food additive. When all the research on aspartame, including evaluations in both the premarketing and postmarketing periods, is examined as a whole, it is clear that aspartame is safe, and there are no unresolved questions regarding its safety under conditions of intended use."

Alot of doctors think its bad (causes headaches, brain tumors ect). It's not good to take alot in. An example would be Diet Nestea, the 0 calorie kind has aspartame but the regular has sugar. You should probably let your child drink normal nestea every once in a while than let him drink a whole bunch of calorie free ones since they'll take in alot more aspartame. Aspartame is usually only in sugar free type foods like junk food, unless your child's a diabetic you should try and stay away from them if youre concerned about side effects.

As much Pepsi as I drink ( i'm a stone addict) I went to drinking diet to avoid looking like the Goodyear blimp.
When my Dr. could not figure out why a couple of Pancreatic numbers were high I did some research and guess what.
Aspartame was referenced a couple of times as a possible cause.
I now drink the real Pepsi just a lot less and the Pan' numbers are down where they should be.
I don't think I would allow a child of mine to drink alot .
