Also, my hair is blackish, and I want dark purple unders. Should I lighten it then dye, or is it unnesscary?

What is the source of the poofiness? Static/dry air? Coarse, textured hair? I've used Kiehl's Silk Groom for years to reduce frizziness (I have curly hair and live in Florida's humid climate); it is also a nice all-around product for all hair types. Consulting a professional hair dresser is your best bet. This is, thankfully, a relatively affordable process. Likely, they'll suggest cutting it a certain way to avoid "poofiness". Also, if you're looking for a beyond average hair color process, let the pros do it. Semi-permanent processes aren't too expensive.

You need to go to a high class salon and let them do any dying to your hair, they will do it correctly.

Also, for the "poofyness" try straighting it with a Chi iron... they are awesome and take away frizzyness and dryness, makes it shiny and smooth!

You should try Sunsilk shampoo and conditioner in the green bottles for your poofy hair. I don't think that it is necessary to lighten your hair first.

be sure you attempt Paul Mitchell products; first, use "The Cream" it fairly is a bypass away-in conditioner that defend the hair from drying out and keeps moisture, then step 2; "The Foaming Pommade" which provides shine and keeps greater moisture, and final yet not least: "The large Sculpt Glaze" which tames the "poof" and keeps the hair interior the type which you fairly %. those products actually WORKS!!!!!!
