But is attracting a lot of thumbs-downs from people.

The atheists on the page could easily thumbs-up each other and have +10 ratings. They're obviously not. Non-atheists are giving them thumbs downs anyway.

Does this mean that atheists more than non-atheists realize how pointless and petty the whole thumbs-up/down thing is, and set themselves apart from such childishness?

There are some on here who give a thumbs down based not on what is being said but on who is saying it. I can show you an instance where I had one up and two down, the person above me (a Christian) had two up and one down. And we said the exact same thing.

Based on that (a small sample set, I know) I assume that half of the christians who give a thumbs down, do so without considering the merit of the answer.

I’ve actually noticed this for some time and wondered about it. The only conclusion I can draw is that Atheists don’t thumbs down people as much (the only time that I do is when there is a REALLY long cut and paste answer and I want to get it off my screen).

No, I see thumbs up and down before anybody else answers. Some people just don't like the question and don't like the answers.

I think we probably just realise that the whole thing is a fairly major excercise in pasing the time until going to bed.

It is actually really useful when you want to avoid the mile-long copy and paste pieces of spam. But other than that, it's useless.
