If you could afford it, and your missionary was serving in Europe, would you rather pick them up and see where they served, or await their return at the local airport?

For Mormon missionaries and their parents: your son has been gone for 2 years to Europe, for example, lets say Hungary, specifically. Would you go pick them up if you could afford to, or would you rather await their return and meet them at the local airport?

Let me preface my answer by saying I'm single, no kids, and never served a mission, but if this senario applied to me, I think I would like to see where they served. I know when I was in a Branch, several of "our missionaries" would bring their parents to Church the Sunday before they left, or would come back a week or two later (we usually got missionaries from UT, ID or CA). And we just loved it. It was nice to see the missionaries again, and to tell the parents how much we appreciated their son/daughter. The parents seemed to like it too. One time we even met the fiance. - Although that was kind of weird, because we never thought of him as anything but a missionary and a son. haha

Having lived in Utah, and not being a Mormon, I would go and pick them up. That way I would have a better understanding of what their missionary experience was like and could relate to some of the issues that they may bring home with them.

It would also be helpful to meet some of the people they lived with and spent time with, unfortunately not all Mormons are the same and your son or daughter may have been exposed to things they are too embarrassed or ashamed to talk to you about. You will have a better feeling for what really happened on the mission if you go there yourself and get to know first hand the people who were housing your kids.
