I would say neither. First dates are a little soon to be giving gifts, but if you feel you must, the flowers. The cook book could be looked at as a bad idea as it could imply a bit of sexism. But I would say neither and wait until 2nd or better yet 3rd date

Bring a single rose not a huge bouquet of flowers. One flower says I cared enough to pick this one out for you, a bouquet says I'm sorry.
