Linux was an offshoot of Unix. It was designed by Linus Torvalds in the late 80's. It was used as a complimentary operating system for a free software company called GNU. I would say it is used for nothing more than the development of software and the internet. Linux users use it because it is open sourced and much stabler than windows. Open sourced I mean anyone can modify and help with the development of Linux itself. It is also way safer from viruses. OpenSUSE was originally I believe a german version of linux.

"not please dont say say for an alternative OS"
Why not? Linux is an OS. That isn't an opinion, it is a fact.

"what i mean is what do most users of Linux (if you need a flavor.. openSUSE) use linux for? "
You need an OS for your computer. You get a few various choices, and some people prefer Linux. Your choices include Windows, Macs, Linux, BSDs, and Solaris. Anything else is pretty minor. So some would use Linux.

Linux is *NIX like system, so people who need UNIX environments definitely use it. Linux has a set of power user tools no other OS can match, so people who program or do something like probe networks, etc. need Linux. People who want a free OS may pick Linux (as opposed to paying money for Windows or Macs). People who need to use an old computer may use Linux because its flexible in terms of old hardware. People who just want stability and don't like the security flaws of Windows may use Linux. Lots of reasons.

"and what was Linux designed to do?"
Be an alternative to UNIX.

Linux was made to make geeks feel all smug and superior as they look down upon the proletarian troglodytes who use Windows. Which actually works!
(unlike Linux) LOL!!!
