Everyone has different beliefs on this. The most common is that the wedding band goes on first (closest to the palm) then the engagement ring. This is (supposedly) because the vein in the left ring finger is the most direct to the heart. On the wedding day, the bride wears the engagement ring on her right hand so the wedding ring can go on first, and it is not supposed to be taken off.

I have heard of some customs wearing the rings on the right hand, or the engagement ring first because that was the first sign from the husband.... It's all up to personal preference, really.

Your engagement ring go near and dear to your heart and the band next and your not suppose to have your engagement ring on the day of the wedding because they both should be together when they get handed to the groom the day of the wedding.

In the wedding ceremony, the bride has the engagement ring on already and the groom puts the wedding ring over it. Forever thereafter, the order is reversed--so, in day-to-day living, you put the wedding ring on first, then the engagement ring on the outside. Oh, and make sure to ensure your engagement ring, and if you're honeymooning anywhere exotic, leave the engagement ring at home, someplace safe.

The wedding band should be the closest to your heart, then the engagement ring protects it.

You wear the wedding ring closest to your heart.

And also why on the left hand, this custom began with the Egyptians, who believed that a vein on the left hand was directly connected to the heart
