Pros...
Most gyms have personal trainers (some cheap or free first time deals)
Keeps you going. You won't want to give up if you know you're paying for it.
Watching other people build will want to push yourself harder.
Classes. Some people like the yoga or other classes.
Tons of different items. Some things you would have thought of training before.
Some have pools... great cardio.
Tread mills... again... cardio.
Tons of weight sizes, you'll never need to buy another dumbbell size again.

Cons....
Distance. If its far you might not want to make the trip daily.
Home workouts can be just as effective if you know what your doing.
Protein straight after a workout may mean buying a $4 premade EAS shake from your gym (boooo).
Some equipment is always in use... and it always seems to be the ones I want to do.
Cost. Face it... its cheaper at home if you don't go crazy with a bowflex or other nonsense items.

My gym cost $37.00 a month for the student discount. I personally train at home now, and build even better and quicker.

Here are some Pros for your parents:

-helps you stay motivated to be healthy
-meet some cool people
-you won't need to buy equipment
-it get's you out of the house
-If you get a job there, the membership is free. ;)
-Less time spent sitting around.

The aren't that many cons:
-sometimes they can be packed
-drinks at the gym are sometimes expensive
-some have start-up fees that are ridiculous

Other than that, you can easily ignore the other stuff that goes on.

If there is a Planet Fitness in your area, try it out. I've tried Gold's and several others, but went back to PF every time. I pay $20 a month, get drinks at 1/2 price, free tanning, and free guest privileges, usable at all Planet Fitness locations in the US.

a few months ago i was asking the same question as you. when i got the membership for $30 a month it was awesome for the first month. i was going to the gym about every other day and working out pretty hard. but then u slowly start going less and less, and eventually u are going about once a week, and paying a lot of money for it. and you cannot cancel, or u will pay a huge fee. i would much rather just do push ups and sit ups in my room now. if u think about it you can work your entire upper body in your room with no equiptment. and u can run and do squats lifting your couch or something to work ur legs. look at people in prison, they are buff as hell.

there are far more pros than cons. cons would probably be the cost and the likelihood of getting an injury but you can get that anyway. the pros are you loose weight. gain self esteem and confidence, make new friends, get toned, improve your immune system, and you would be a lot less likely to get heart disease, diabetes, the list is endless.

There are only pros, there aren't any cons. Just join. I paid for my initial membership fee which was thirty dollars, and now just pay twenty dollars per month. I don't even miss it.

there is a gym on every corner. why not convince your parents about starting your own professional trainer and use the out doors, simple work out eqip,go to people homes, jobs etc,low overhead. see it,dream it, live it. own it.
