If you live in somewhere where it actually gets cold do you think it would be ok to take a 10 month old to the park if it is -6C and about -15C with the windchill?

Obviously bundled up well.

My poor dog is going nuts, and I want to get the heck out of the house? The problem is the park is along the railway tracks so it is definitly windy.

Thanks.

lil' angel,

The park is BESIDE the tracks. The wind come unobstructed down the tracks and there are no trees in the park big enough to block the wind.

Ok, are we clear now?

I'm getting cabin fever too, I'm planning on a little adventure with my toddler-but of course he'll be bundled up and I'm putting him in a sling so he'll stay warm. People have done this for ages-we've survived!
Oh my son is going house crazy too, he keeps bringing me his shoes. Children and babies love outdoors!

I would wait until it got warmer just to be on the safe side, however, if the temps where you live are that low for extended periods of time, here are some tips about taking the child out:
Layers are essential!
In addition to bundling well, put the baby in a stroller which is then covered in order to block the wind from her/his face.
Be careful not to smother or constrict the child within the layers.
Only go out for about five minutes the first time and increase to 10 and then 15 if all has gone well. Don't be out longer than 15 minutes. Those short times will have to do until it is warmer.
Also, remember that the cold dries out the airway, making the child more susceptible to illness, so it wouldn't hurt to set up a cool-mist humidifier in your home.
Don't put a hot water bottle near the child when you go out in the event it leaks without you realizing it, and freezing into ice against the baby.
People have survived ages in harsh climates but that was out of necessity. If you can wait it out, then that would be best.

I live in Minnesota. My son was born in June, so it was April when he was 10 months old. It's sometimes still pretty cold here in April. I don't know how to do the C to F calculations. Anyway, even at 19 months I don't take him out if it's below 25 F outside. When it's that cold, he's bundled up and we usually go out for a 10 or 15 minute walk around the block. It's great for fresh air. Instead, we walk in the mall a lot, go to visit friends with kids, and our school has a great indoor playground that we can go to for free. It's wonderful in the winter. I'm guessing you're in the UK or Canada. I don't know how your schools work there, but perhaps you could call a school and ask for some advice. I just don't like the idea of him being out when it's real cold -- especially with a low windchill. Their skin freezes SO fast.

Absolutely. Just bundle, bundle, layers, layers... if baby's skin is entirely covered except for the face, then the cold weather is fine. The only bothersome thing that would cut the visit to the park short is the wind... it tends to take the baby's breath away if it's really blowing. Have you got a great baby carrier? I like the Ergo, and it keeps my baby's head close enough to me so that if the wind blows he can snuggle into my chest... just a thought. A little bit of that fresh air is good for your child, even in very cold regions. Good luck, stay warm! :)

That's like 21 degrees Fahrenheit, I think?

I'm assuming you'll be babywearing with the little one? Having (him?) against your body, maybe even under your coat, would of course help. And of course I'd try to keep the trip from being too long. Would only 10-15 mins be worthwhile for the dog and worth the trouble for you?

I live in Phoenix, but I am a Mom & here's what I suggest. Take your baby in the stroller bundled extremely well. Wouldn't hurt to get a hot water bottle & put it at the baby's back or on tummy - wrapped up well. Take short strolls, this gets everyone some fresh(ish) air & different scenery.

really bundle lil one up, have her in the stroller covered in blankets with a blanket over the stroller to keep out any wind and keep some warm air in with baby. i've had to do this a few times this winter and it works :)

Bundle up and GO! I grew up in a very cold part of America and we went out all the time...when you get home...make sure to change any wet clothing ...stay warm and dry and dont go for 6 hours....an hour to get some air should be fine...

For a little while 15 minuets. I would take my oldest out for 15/20 minutes when he was little.

if you bundle the baby up, it won't hurt a thing. most of the people that have already answered this question are being way over protective. it would probably be good for the baby to get outside.
