A big, red, screaming NO!!! Of course you aren't! Johnny Weir only started when he was 12 and I'm pretty sure that Evan Lysacek started when he was 11. It's more normal for men to start late and go very far, but who says that girls can't? I started when I was a month away from being twelve, and a year later I was in Freestyle 8. I thought that I'd never get anything accomplished with my skating, but I have lots of prospects in front of me now.

If your coach is discouraging you, it may be time to switch. But let me warn you, switching coaches is usually a BIG deal. Don't do it without thinking seriously about it for a month or so (i.e. what coach you would want to switch to, observing the results of your coach and/or others), and let your parents make the final decision. I wanted a different coach from the one that I have now, and had my parents let me take lessons from her, I would be nowhere near the skater that I am now. Think about this a lot, I won't believe that a coach who tells you that you can't compete is the best. If you don't want to switch, then I highly recommend scheduling a meeting with your coach and having a talk about where you want to be in skating a year from now, what you want to do with it, etc. ect. Coaches are usually great with things like that.

Good luck, and go for the gold!

No of course not! That's too bad your coach thinks so. I competed in freestyle 2 when I was 12. I competed against 4 other people, and 2 of the kids I competed against were little kids, but one of the other kids was 11 and the other one was 14 and I got second place. Competing is way fun and the at least a couple of the people you compete against will probably be around your age. A lot of the times, the older kids win. You should do it!

You might be too old for the Olymics or Worlds, but smaller competitions will be fine. Your coach really shouldn't be discouraging you like that!
