I am currently doing a 4 day split

monday - chest and tricep
tuesday - legs
wednesday - off
thursday - shoulders
friday - back and biceps

I like this workout plan however, i am a little concerned that i am only training each body part once a week is this too little? or is it good for recovery etc

Any comments or suggestions will be gratefully received

Instead of using days of the week for your split try the
Day 1, Day 2, etc... method. I also prefer to train opposing muscle groups on the same day. Arnold Schwarzenegger suggests it, and it is very effective.

Day 1: Chest & Back
Day 2: Legs
Day 3: off
Day 4: Shoulders
Day 5: Arms

It's also good to have a day off before your chest day.
So after day 5 you would rest.

I have done a split similar to yours, and to make it more condensed I did this:
Day 1: Chest, triceps
Day 2: Legs and Shoulders
Day 3: Back and Biceps
Day 4: off

Basically, you could train each muscle group twice a week, allowing sufficient recovery at the same time.
How often you train each group also depends on your goals. Usually body builders train each twice a week. If you don't want to get that big, stick with once a week.

People assume that if you don't kill every muscle daily you're not getting in the right workout. They couldn't be more wrong. This looks like a great schedule. Remember to train traps with your shoulders and maybe think about including some high intensity cardio a few days a week to speed up your BMR and your body's production of T2 and T3.

This is my personal schedule...

Sunday - Shoulders and Traps
Monday - Core
Tuesday - Chest and Triceps
Wednesday - Core
Thursday - Biceps and Back
Friday - Core
Saturday - Legs

H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training) Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

This let's all your parts rest and allows you to explode when you do train your specific segments. Also, the consistency keeps you going... you'll never see your goals fade.
