last three years. She has about an inch of new growth which she states is a chrome color and very coarse. The ends are VERY black and aren't phased by anything she's put on it. She would like her end result to be some shade of brown. She realizes the more chemicals she applies the worst her hairs condition will be. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Please advise.

Let me start by saying I am not a licensed cosmologist, but I have played with hair dye so much over the last 14 years that I feel like an expert. Black hair dye needs to be removed. L'Oreal sells hair color remover that works nicely; I was trying to dye my hair espresso brown once, but it came out jet black. I only left the hair color remover on for (literally) 5 minutes, and most of the color came running out. Keep in mind, though, stripping color will damage the hair further, leading to possible "straw" like texture. If she can afford it, I suggest going to a hairdresser and letting them do it. They'll strip her old color off and find a shade that suits her skin tone, hair texture, etc. Try to convince your Gran to consult a more upscale salon for this process, as they'll take care to give her the products that'll minimize damage. Any major change done at home is a crap shoot. But if she insists doing it at home, check out L'Oreal's hair color remover; I'd advise doing a small test area first. Once you apply, keep checking it to see how long it takes before the color begins to fade a bit. As for re-dying, gray and white hairs absorb permanent color better- semi-perms don't seem to grab hold of those pesky grays very well. Hope this helps, and kudos to Gran for rockin' a new 'do in her 60's!

Since black color won't take any colors she put on... First she needs professional (only once won't hurt), at there they will light touch of bleach out the black parts then color in brown or any lighter colors (not Black) she wants, then very 4 weeks or so she can touch up her grey parts or whole head (renew colors but not BLACK, again.) at home. I suggest L'oreal Excellence because it coverage grey hairs 99.99 % compare with others. As long as she uses her regular hair conditioner everyday or hair serum (any brands). And every week she leaves hair conditioner come with hair colors package at least 2 mins. It'll keep her hair shine and soft. (from my experience when I changed my natural brown hair to BLACK... and no more BLACK, too expensive to fix it).

the best thing to do would go to a prefessional hair salon and ask their advice...they'll probably tell her to bleach the previous color out than re-dye it...which is safest to do there, because it yeilds the least mistakes.
