Is the shoulder to be taken as the point where the neck and the back meets, as per AKC? But that is called the WITHERS rite?

Withers:
The high part of the back of a horse or similar animal, located between the shoulder blades.

AGAIN...the withers is the HIGHEST point of the shoulders. On a Dane, you can easily feel, if not see the actual shoulder bone, or scapula. At the highest point of that bone, is the withers. It is difficult to get an accurate measurement at home using a yardstick, but you should get the idea.

Withers or shoulders are one in the same.

It is where the two shoulder blades (scapula's) meet. It will be the highest point on the back.
