I got the flu 4 years ago and ever since I have had nasal congestion every day of my life. I can breathe out of one nostril but the other is constantly clogged. I don't know why it hasn't gone away and I DON'T want to use sprays or pills the rest of my life. Any suggestions?

You try to run an air purifier and warm mist humidifier in your home and see how that does. Otherwise you might need to be on allergy pills. Has your doctor checked out your nasal passage to make sure it is not blocked by a polyp or something?

1. Talk to your doctor and find out what is causing it. It could be allergies or irritants in the air in your home or in the area where you live. There are things you can do to reduce these irritants.
2. If your doctor thinks it is necessary, there is a surgery you can get. My mom got it about a year ago and she has only had one sinus infection since, as opposed to constantly for years beforehand. And when I say constantly, I mean literally it never cleared up. Basically they go in and they clean out the sinuses, and I think they do something with the glands that overproduce the mucus, which causes the congestion. Your insurance may cover it.

Good luck!

I know this doesn't sound like such a simple fix but its really an easy problem to remedy. Steam your nasal passage several times a week, you can use a facial spa or just a pan of hot steaming water (not boiling) and inhale the steam for 10-15 minutes each time. Invest in the Breathe Right nasal strips to use at night while you sleep, trust me they are worth it. Also if you live in a pretty dry climate you should consider getting a humidifier for your home. These tactics combined should have you breathing better in no time.

I live in San Antonio, Texas, the allergy capital of the world. About three years ago, my ENT doctor suggested doing a nasal wash once or twice a day to clear your sinuses. It feels weird at first, but it does wonders if you stick with it. Get an adult version of one of those bulbs that you use to clear a baby's nose. Heat a normal 8 Oz. glass of water in the microwave for one minute. Stir in about a tablespoon of salt and then shoot one bulb full up each nostril over a sink. You will be surprised what a difference this makes. I used to get three sinus infections a year; now I get one about every year and a half and my allergies are better as well.

Sounds like you have allergies. Get an allergy spray for your house (frebreeze allergen remover). Try this and adding an air purifyer to wherever you spend most of your time and in the same room with you while you sleep. Make sure to dust and vaccumm your rugs twice a week. If nessacary vaccum everyday. This will remove a lot of the pollutant in the air and hopefully clear up that stuffy nose.

I would recommend that you see an ENT (Ear/nose/throat specialist). There could be many different reasons why you have this congestion.

Allergies are a very likely cause as well as chronic sinus infections.
Some require very simple treatments while others may even require surgery.

Welcome to the wonderful world of perpetual sinusitis. There are quite a few of us out there who suffer from this all their lives, however there are a few things you can try, especially considering yours was apparently started by a cold or sinus infection. Contact a Naturopath, and perhaps a chiropractor. Before you actually see anyone make sure they're accredited and try and get some testimonials from former patients. Although there aren't as many around as there used to be there are a few dodgy practitioners out there.

You've gotta get on pills for an extended time period to knock it out...not lifetime, but 6 months or so...maybe some anti-biotics, a 2 week stint of steroids (prednisone) and some zyrtek or claritin....

The sprays actually exacerbate the problems from this congestion, which is more likely to be an infection anyways. You may have experimented some trauma to tissue from the flu you had 4 years ago, making this tissue less responsive to immune system function from this damage.

It is my opinion also that, even though medical advancement may have slowed cancer rates, at present, global warming issues will indeed make cancer rates higher, and also bacteriolocial infections will also increase, regardless of the true, but not connected fact that our bodies are getting immune to the anti-biotics we use, which in tandem with the global-warming issues health-dilemma, should make one wake up to its reality more quickly, instead of trying to feed me their misinformed ideas or mention of the anti-biotics issues here and towards my post to you.

Outside of your own immune deficieny issues, I feel the best thing for you is to take garlic supplements, as this staves off and fights infection (but find a brand that also has parsley in it, as the active ingredient in garlic which makes it work, causes its odor to emit from your pores, and the parsleys chlorophyl halts this odor-causing issue by masking it.

If allergies come into play, by way of sensitivities which may be caused by both weakened immune system response, either by the cause of any factors, including more toxic and allergenic particles in our atmosphere, and soil, due to another explanation I gave answer to in regards to global warming in post here at YA, as to aid in understanding to another topic, try also then honey which is produced by bees within thirty miles circumference from where you live, as these elements you may be allergic to, will certainly be found in this honey, and therefore by eating maybe two tablespoons a day, yo will find its taking increasing your immunity to such allerges by exposure to such, which also leaves for a much better taste in your mouth, by taste and success, in your efforts when compared to trying any other remedies for such purpose you mentioned.

Will you thank me later for my explanation as to my all-encompassing and studied opinion in regards to your dilemma now, or wait until you have tried these two ideas for a couple of weeks and find that these facts helped to greatly alleviate the health-issues that concern, and disurb you, enough to post to find remedy for here?
