After my fire in my fireplace went out I noticed my dog eating something with a loud crunching sound. She was eating the small pieces of charred wood that had burnt down significantly. Can this hurt her or cause her problems?

Charcoal has traditionally been fed to dogs and even people suffering from stomach upsets and gas. Treats containing charcoal can be found .Eating a modest amount is unlikely to hurt her, but it is always wise to call the vet if there is any doubt.

One thing to think about is whether the wood you burned in your fireplace was treated with any chemicals or is the wood of a tree known to be toxic to dogs.

Here is a list of trees reported to be toxic to dogs:
Trees: Avocado, Buddhist Pine, Chinaberry Tree, Japanese Yew (aka Yew), Lacy Tree, Macadamia Nut, Madagascar Dragon Tree, Queensland Nut, Schefflera, Yew (aka Japanese Yew)
Vines: Branching Ivy, English Ivy, European Bittersweet, Glacier Ivy, Hahn's self branching English Ivy, Needlepoint Ivy

Dogs chewing on wood and outdoor sticks is natural. It is also natural for them to chew on other "tasty" items..out of instinct and curiosity. Charred wood may make them sick, and be a source of carcinogens as well. I would discourage them from getting access to the wood..keep it off limits, and train him/her not to eat that. As another answerer mentioned, keep an eye for bowel or other unpleasant gastrointestinal troubles. If so, then notify your vet.

Dogs like to chew and chewing is okay. The problem comes with them swallowing pieces of what they chew. Wood can cause splinters in the gums and on down. Check the inside of her mouth and watch for any signs of discomfort such as a belly ache.

She may be lacking in a ineral found in the wood. I see no harm in her chewing on wood. Dog's chew on many things without danger. Try giving her some dog muti-vitamins.

If it is just plain wood then it should be find... but if the wood is aromatic then it could cause problems... call your vet to check it out and watch your dog... even plain burnt wood could cause a tummy ache...

Uhh...I don't know about dogs, but I ate charcoal once and bleed blood out my buttocks all day afterwards. Thats might have something to do with the nails I ate for breakfast earlier that day, but, eh.

Can cause loose stools due to irritated stomach and intestinal tract and could possibly cause a blockage.....you might want to consider a screen for your fireplace.

well i dont think this will harm her coz, i have to pup that usually chewed on our chair, table leg and sometimes like the wooden cabinet knobs lol. and so far, i never had any problem. Well if you feel unconfortable, bring her to the vet or call them and ask question. they only charge you if you go there.

hope everything ok with her.. but, usually if the stomach is not taking it they will thow it all up. or it will go with their poop.
