Abeka offers cursive teaching in kindergarten. I thought it was way to soon, seeing how she just learning to write manuscript. I thought after 1st grade if she has the manuscript down I would start teaching cursive writing in 2nd grade. I've heard many say that public schools don't teach it until 3rd grade. When did you start teaching your homeschooler cursive writing?

I have taught the Abeka Curriculum for many years. Why not follow their ideas. They have many more years in the teaching business that both of us.
I have visited Pensacola Christian Academy and visited some of the lower elementary classes. It will amaze you that the teacher and every student is so organized, following that great theme of Let everything be done decently and in order. It was awesome.

I started with cursive for my ds (that is, I didn't introduce print first) and in kindergarten for my dd, who had already begun printing on her own.

There's a wealth of research out there on how it's better for kids to start with cursive and learn it young. Cursive is actually easier on a kid's fine motor skills than print because a young child has a hard time getting lines nice and straight. But there are also issues with reversals when they learn manuscript first (kids just don't reverse cursive!) There's also the matter of if you want them to be writing in cursive, why have them master print first? They will be able to print just fine later on because print is everywhere and they will be able to imitate it once they get their fine motor skills under control. If a person were to decide to give lessons on print, just to make sure, it's been found that kids transition better from cursive to print than from print to cursive. Also, if kids know the curisve letters, it's easy for them to see the print.

As for starting cursive later, the beginning of grade 3 should be the LATEST you start cursive. Something developmental goes on and if they learn it after that, it's even harder and they're less likely to write in it consistently unless they're highly motivated. It was something noticed in our school district (I used to teach) that when they moved cursive to the end of the grade 3 year, fewer and fewer kids had decent writing by grade 6 or had scrapped cursive entirely.
I've been teaching my gr. 1 ds with an unlinked cursive for now, so just like print where he can lift up his hand to focus on the next letter

Usually by third grade your child should start to write cursive. However, many states do not require that it is taught. I teach fourth grade and many of my students can not write in cursive. My goal is that they can all sign their name in cursive. It's sad that it is not taught like it used to be but I can understand with everything else that is going on in the schools why it is missed. My advice to parents is to ask the teachers to send home practice worksheets that the students can use especially if they have bad handwriting. I do this with manuscript as well for my students with poor handwriting. Also, downloading practice sheets can be found on line and used at home by the students. Good Luck!

This homeschooler never learned cursive and has turned out quite successful with her printing. I seem to recall my parents tried to teach it to me in second grade, but since neither of them use it . . .

why on earth would you homeschool your kids? dont you want them to have a social life? They need REAL communication skills to make it out in the work world anyways.
