they are always moving 12 months out of the year. but it is easier to see in colder months as the foliage is gone but the again they can see you easier too! They are hungrier in the winter and might actually be more active in day time to conserve body heat. as for the people thinking they are protected i think if they will take the time to check the regs. almost every state has a coyote season.

I have used some large calibers for coyotes, usually some of my military surplus rifles. I have used my Garand, 8mm Mausers, .30-06 and my favorite, the Swede 6.5x55 in a Model 96. I don't take the hides and prefer not to even touch those nasty things. These rifles are overkill, I know, but I'm usually on ranches at the permission of ranchers to control the population, in the middle of nowhere. I'm in the southwest desert and while you think it's wide open, it's actually got quite a bit of sagebrush and the coyotes can show up from anywhere if your have a good call. I like to set up on the side of a hill or mesa so I get a good overview of the area and the call sounds are amplified by the hill. This has some drawbacks, as I have had them show up behind and on top of me. I have a portable blind that keeps me hidden and keeps the sun off too. A bunch of guys out here use combo guns.....rifle over shotgun. The rifle of choice is the Savage 24. A good friend has a .222 Remington over a 20 gauge. He says it's the perfect coyote gun, as you have range and a good shotgun for ones that show up close in. Coyote are very fast and wary.....they come running in fast but can pick up a scent or sound quickly and disappear as fast as they show up. There is not time for sitting around relaxing, you need to be scanning the area and be ready to shoot in a couple of seconds. I plan on getting a .243 soon for this, it's got a lot of range.

Coyotes are around 24/7/365. But I wouldn't worry about hunting them in hot or cold weather...... Just make sure its the legal season to actually be hunting. Heck you can hunt coyotes in the rain and snow if your season falls right.

It's better in cold weather. They have less food available so they come to decoys quicker, and in places where the leaves fall from the trees in winter you can see them better from farther away and get more shots.
Good luck!
Coyotes moved in where I live about 10 years ago and they are terrible on the rabbits, grouse, turkeys, quail, baby deer, and even sheep and baby cows. Last month coyotes killed 2 of my neighbor's dogs and ate them. Kill every coyote you can. You are saving better animals when you do.

most predator hunting is done during cold weather, for a couple of reasons. You will get better responsiveness to calling when food is scarce, you can seeing the animal better with less foliage. However if the season is open year round in your location its can boil down to personal comfort..I like the winter,I like the primeness of the fur and I hate the bugs that always swarm in warmer temps. hope this helps

In most places the coyote is hunted in the winter. The fur is thicker (i.e. their winter pelt). Food is less, so population control will happen one way or another.

Since they hunt primarily at night, it seems likely that they are accustomed to colder weather. Thus, hunting for them is likely to be more successful when it is colder (and darker).

The colder it is, the coyotes would have to move around more to stay warm, atleast thays my theory

FOR SEVERAL REASONS COLD WEATHER OR WINTER IS BETTER
COYOTES PACK UP IN FEBRUARY FOR MATING SEASON ALLOWING FOR MULTIPLE SHOTS
THE FOOD SOURCES ARE DOWN SO THEY ARE GENERALLY HUNGRIER
THEY EXPEND MORE ENERGY KEEPING WARM SO THEY NEED MORE FOOD
THEY CAN BE LOCATED EASIER BY FINDING PRINTS IN THE SNOW
THEIR HIDES ARE MUCH FULLER IN WINTER
HUNTING IN WINTER MEANS LESS INSECTS PESTERING YOU AS YOU SIT NEAR BUSHES CALLING THEM
TO NAME A FEW
