As a dealer, I give the customer whatever keys I have. Sometimes I get a used car with 5 or six sets of keys, sometimes I get only one.

If it is a basic key, I have no problem getting a spare cut for a good customer. Some cars have laser cut keys, that have to be ordered. Sometimes it costs over $100 per key (dealer cost). I do not get extras cut for those cars!

Most modern cars will be supplied with a minimum of 2 ignition keys. Do not accept anything less.

If you are buying a high value vehicle always check to see how many ignition keys come with the vehicle from the manufacturer compared to what you are being given.

If you find out that it comes with say "4" (BMW) and you are only given 3 it means that there is a key out there that will open your vehicle and allow it to be driven away........but be aware that in circumstances like that you dont need to reject the car...some manufacturers can reprograme the car so that it will only recognise the keys that you have been given...ie the missing one will be erased from the vehicles memory and despite being a mechanical match will not allow the vehicle to start.

Two pairs of keys would be four keys.
Most modern cars only use one key for all doors, fuel filler and ignition, so you will usually get two keys - one to use and one to keep as spare.

Make it a condition of the purchase that you will be supplied with a spare (or spares if the car needs two different keys).

Depends on the dealer, BUT just a tip... if you buy a ford or any other car with a master key IE a "red" key, make sure you get that one!!!!!!! it cost me £130:00 to get one
Good luck

all depends on the dealer if its a big name place they should get a 2nd key made if they dont have it already but if its just a small business the person they got the car off may have only had 1 key.

the numnber of keys are directly related to the trade in. if the customer gives me two sets, i pass both along. if just one set, then, unfortunately, the next guy is out for the price of the key. CAN be built into the deal, but you have to be up front with your sales person. make it a deal breaker. you'll get your key, but your 'discount' may end up being less.

No only having one key instead of two is not good enough reason to not buy the car. If you had signed up for the motor you could also find yourself losing deposit if you try and refuse on that grounds.
