The rule of thumb is 2 months...if there are a lot of out of town people who will need to make extra arrangements (especially flights) then send out save the dates so they can get everything together...If it is over a holiday weekend or is a destination wedding then you'll want to go with something more like 3 months, again to give adequate time for prep.

6-8 weeks is correct, BUT if you go the way of the A list and B List of invites you will need to be on the the 8 week side of things because you need to get rsvps back so you can send out your b list invites.
