Of course you can file your own taxes ! The feds even have a site (and call center) to help you do just that.

BUT... there are some general guidelines to consider.

Do you have a complex return owing to rental or several properties

Do you have multiple income sources

Do you have unusually large expenses that might be deductible

THESE are the things that will save you some money when you file (or MAY save you some money).

Another alternate is to get a tax filing software like Turbo Tax which will address many of these questions to you and then print out the proper forms (all filled in) after the same sort of question and answer session your tax accountant would do.

All of these are good options... you just need to pick and choose.

(BTW I wish *I* could get my taxes done for $50.... that is REALLY cheap ... here on the west cost mine runs about $400)

.

If you don't have a lot of stuff to claim then using turbo tax or an equivalent software will do the trick just right. Once you buy a house or have your own business etc etc then it becomes complicated. You can also just pickup a from at your local post office and fill it out yourself. It not hard but is confusing for some reason. I personally prefer the software. Some software like the H.R. block ones have certain guarantees. They may help you if you get audited or so they claim.

Sometimes turbo tax comes bundle with other software or they have mail in rebates that make it cheap. You may get an upgrade on the following year, making it cheaper in the long run.

If you have simple taxes - no itemized deductions for mortgage interest, property taxes, medical costs, etc, no complicated sources of income like stocks, bonds, rent, investments, and so forth - you can do the short form or 1040 EZ. It's not hard, it will just need you to spend an hour or so organizing your paperwork, filling out the forms, etc. You can do the long form 1040 this way too if you want, but it's more hassle. I use the turbo tax program for the federal return. My state and city returns are fairly easy, so I don't bother with tax software for them.

You can pick up a tax form and an instruction booklet at the local library. For a simple return, it is pretty easy to follow the instructions to fill out the form.
If you prepare taxes for other people and make a mistake, you will be liable for any penalties and late fees that they are charged. So don't do it unless you are sure you know what you are doing.

For those filing single and not itemized, a 1040EZ form should do the trick. However, that form is way too easy.

If you are itemizing and don't want to go to a tax preparer, then you can get Quicken Tax or Turbotax or some tax software. That'll do the trick.

ive done mine since i was probably 18, and i never had a computer to do them with. Just get all your paperwork together and follow the directions on the tax booklet. I assume that you dont have tons of stocks and stuff you have to hide the profits from, if you do just get a lawyer to find the loopholes like all the other rich people.

I agree with most of what has been said, but you mention making money from preparing returns for people you know. Please understand that there are rules regarding this. Anyone who prepares any return for consideration (cash or barter) is bound by IRS Circular 230. If you do not understand what that means to you in practice, it is too late to think about doing tax returns for money this year.

If it's all W2 income, it's easy. You could probably do a 1040EZ if that's the case.

Gets complicated if you have mortgage interest, banking interest, dividends, home sale, 1099 income, business profit or loss, lots of deductions.
