We have a puppy who is half chihuahua and ****-tzu, he's a little boy. However, we were thinking about buying a full blood ****-tzu little girl, so we could breed them later. What are the pros and cons of having both female and male, and can they be in the same room all the time or what?

First off, there is NOTHING wrong with mutts or mixed-breeds; there are millions of wonderful mutts who are currently languishing in shelters, who are desperate for good homes. And yes, some of the "breed snobs" and so-called "reputable breeders" on this board do denigrate those of us who love and own mutts by referring to our pets as crap, etc.-- and the "breed snobs" certainly don't help the situation of dog overpopulation by insulting mutts and the owners who love them (frankly, in my opinion, some of these breed snobs appear to view their dogs more as "collectibles" or "artifacts" rather than as beloved family pets. ).

That said, you should NOT -- repeat NOT -- breed your dog. You need to get him neutered ASAP. I love mutts; in fact, I prefer them. Indeed, I currently have two wonderful, beautiful, intelligent, unique mutts that I wouldn't trade for any pedigreed dog in the universe. There are, however, too many equally wonderful mutts (and purebreds, for that matter) who are currently dying in shelters -- wonderful animals who will never be adopted, simply because there are too many of them. It's because I love dogs (particularly mutts!) so much, that I implore you to get your own dogs fixed. Most mixed-breed lovers (like me) will never purchase an animal from a breeder. What's the point?? If you want MORE adorable, wonderful mixed-breed pets, that's fine -- but go to your local shelter, pound or rescue group, and adopt them. Please don't bring any more into the world.

Forget the insults from the breed snobs on these boards... mutts ARE wonderful pets (the best, in my opinion), but there are already plenty of them (too many of them!) in the world. Every dog that you bring into the world -- mixed breed, pedigreed, whatever -- contributes to the tragedy that plays out daily in shelters across the nation. Even if you find homes for YOUR pups, you are potentially taking homes away from the desperate animals that are already here. Please do the right thing and get your dog neutered.

Mix breed dogs should not be bred nor should 90% of purebreds.

Breeding is a responsability..there is a whole lot more to it then simply mating two dogs & producing puppies.

If you love your dog get him neutered..He'll be a lot healthier & happier for it. He won't be at risk for testicular & prostrate cancers & infections, he won't develop serious behavior issues, he won't become dog aggressive, he'll pay more attention to you and less on trying to find a mate.

Also if you bought from a pet store be advised the dog likely came from a puppy mill and if he didn't he came from an irresponsible breeder so the odds of him passing on some genetic defect and bad health is very high.

Owning an intact male & female in the same household is best left for those with expereince. It can be extremely tricky and can create some issues you don't want or need.

Delibrate breeding of mixes is VERY irresponsible!!

It is not advisable to breed a mixed breed to a pure bred dog. You will not be able to register them with the American Kennel club and will be suck with having to keep all the puppies unless you
have people
in mind who really want the puppies you will get.
To answer your other question, it is better to have a male and female together as usually 2 males or 2 females don't get along very well together.

3 rules -

1st, you've bought a dog from a dog store. That is NOT a good thing! Pet stores buy from Puppy-mills that overbreed dogs and don't care about their quality - They are just out to make a quick buck. Those are the last lines you would ever want to continue!

2nd, getting another dog is fine, but have BOTH spayed or neutered. There are already 1000's of unwanted dogs in shelters that need homes - Why add to the numbers?

3rd, You don't know anything about breeding and we don't take kindly to Backyard Breeders here at YA.

Absolutely terrible idea. There are enough crossbreeds around without adding to the numbers. You won't want to breed her at every season (at least I hope not), so you'd have to keep them totally apart for 3 weeks every 6 months. He'll be totally stressed out and so will you. If you really want to breed, buy a registered well bred Shih Tzu from a reputable breeder & learn from them how to go about things the right way.

You really want to breed them? 17 million dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens are euthanized each year. Just remember even if you find a home for the offspirng, you will be taking away the home of another perfectly good dog and sending it to the gas chamber. If you like animals, it is not going to be easy to give up your puppies to a home or to the pound. The female dog could die while giving birth. You are looking at potentially costly vet bills if something goes wrong and if the puppies get sick before you give them away. The two breeding dogs may or may not get along. They might get in fights.

The rules are if your dog is not the best specimen of the breed then do not breed. Your dog is not even a pure bred dog so breeding it only makes you a byb that breeds for greed. Forget about breeding and neuter your dog.

People on YA! do not take kindly to backyard breeders.

If you want to buy you a female, then do it.When they breed they will need a place to get nasty. But when she's not in season, they will be able to go where they want.I would get a pen or pet taxi for the female, bcause I would not breed her the first season, she'll be too young. You know you can just get him a friend that is nuetered and the breeding will not have to take place.Enjoy your dog or dogs any way.......

I agree with almost everything that they have told you. Please take into consideration what they said! Don't just toss the comments away because they're "insults". I don't agree with the mutt thing, but they are kind of right with how many homeless dogs & pups there are in the world! PLEASE listen to what we're all saying!

If you're going to keep the puppies, then that's fine!

You might think that one little litter isn't going to cause more dogs to get killed, abandoned, or put to sleep. But, the truth is, that's how most of America thinks. Don't just be another ignorant person!

Sorry for the lecture! Give your doggy a handshake for me :)
