Our miltary is there to set up freedom for the Iraqis. In case you aren't aware of it, that is what we've done in many countries ruled by a sadistic animal where the people didn't have basic freedoms. Our troops have fought, been wounded, maimed and died many times in the name of freedom. If we hadn't, most of Europe would be under German rule, for one thing.

Firstly, there are a lot of people in America who do not remember why Iraq was invaded. The world was told that America was going to invade Iraq because they had WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction), and America wanted to make it a safer world by taking those weapons away. However, the invasion was illegal and against the UN. In addition, there were no WMD, so there have been additional stories that have been spun into the media, like freedom for the Iraqi people, or to get Saddam Hussein, etc. Those are not the reason why America invaded Iraq and those have been released by the political spin doctors to redirect the minds of the public from the fact that we were lied to and the UN and the rest of the world was correct not to go into Iraq.
Now there are many different theories in addition to the WMD why the US went against the UN and invaded Iraq, and that includes going after the oil. It is amazing that the normal economic results happened with the invasion (increase in the world price of oil). If you look at the administration in power that made the decision to invade, the mass majority have high connections to oil interests. It could be said that most of the administration's grand children should never have to work again over the money that they got over the appreciation in their interests because of the invasion. That is still a theory since it will never be able to be proven.
The reason why the US troops are still in Iraq is because of the mess that has been caused by the invasion. It has been nothing but a complete mess that was caused by America going in over fabricated reasons. It is tough with over 3,000 deaths of troops, but how many hundreds of thousands of Iraqi innocent civilians have been murdered by both the US troops and the insurgents? How many died because of the illegal US invasion?..............All of them.
Afghanistan did not attack the US, it was a terror group that attacked the US. An international force invaded Afghanistan in order to get out the Taliban and their followers and to stop terrorists from using Afghanistan as a safe haven.
As for your question, I am not sure if I answered it at all, as it may have just raised more questions. More US troops are dying in Iraq because of the invasion, there is so much instability. US troops will continue to die until this problem is solved, probably many years (probably decades) from now. You can not just walk into someone else's country and through force change their whole lives and method of government and not expect there to be push-back. It would like a foreign country invading the US and forcing communism on Americans. What do you think will happen? Do you think that the people would just roll over and accept it? Just because we think that democracy is the best and works amazingly, it does not mean that we have the right to shove that down anyone else's throat with the threat of death. That actually goes against the democratic principle. In addition, due to cultural differences around the world, democracy may not work in those countries. It is not for us to judge or force our morals and beliefs on others, that actually violates the gist of democracy and what the founding fathers were all about.

It was an ongoing problem with the first Iraqi War. Iraq signed an unconditional surrender and Iraq didn't uphold their end of the contract. The embargo was a total failure. Bush made the call to act. Even Bill Clinton deemed Iraq a threat. The act also cuts off Syria from Iran (and now Iran is surrounded by U.S. troops), both of which are helping organiztions overthrow Israel.

Start with reading about when Sadam first took power, then read about the Iran/Iraq war, next The First Gulf War (pay attention to the terms of the cease fire), lastly The Second Gulf War.

All of these will give you the history of events as they happened.

Btw, in WWII we lost 8,000 troops just on Iwo Jima. (That famous picture of those troops pushing up the flag)

Also out of about 1.5 Million troops that have been to Iraq:

23,000 injured
3,000 dead

And the press told us that we would lose 36,000 when we attacked.....

Join the army. You will understand more when you grow up. You are not old enough to understand anything yet. Stick with school for now if you have not dropped out yet and worry about wars when the draft gets back in order and you are drafted and sent over there. OR....read some history on the last wars and conflicts if you are aware there has been any and those stories will answer your question. History is the best teacher.

Afghanistan did not attack us. There were training grounds for terrorists there. Saudi Arabians terrorists attacked us. We are fighting the insurgents, terrorists, and sectarian violence in Iraq because Saddam refused to abide by the sanctions placed against him to stop the first Gulf war. We could just pull out like we did in Afghanistan in the 80's and let it fester into a training ground for terrorists, or finish the fukn game.

The Middle East will never be peaceful without ending the Israeli occupation. This is the conclusion of the UN, EU, Backer-Hamilton report, and President Carter new book. No one could NOT change his mind unless he has no mind.
Occupying other people by force is losing policy in the past and now and has no future.

We went into Iraq to get rid of Saddam and Stabilize Middle East. not to fight Terrorism in Iraq. However, now we are fighting terrorists that does not want a stable and prosperous Iraq in the middle east. They are being funded by Iran and Syria.

Let us imagine for a minute that there is no US soldiers in Iraq. Who do you think will control Iraq?. Certainly not the poor citizens of Iraq. Once we hand over the country to the terrorists, what do you think they are going to do?.

have you already forgotten 3,000 + people civilians, most of them who never lifted a finger against these people where killed in one day?.

Do you not think solders who enlisted voluntarily, knew they were going to fight people who hid behind women and children?

Of course you did know all this. And that is why you have re posted this question!

We are in Iraq so that someday all the Iraqi children can hold hands and sing songs about baby Jesus.

Bush is an Evangelical, and an Evangelical's first duty is to spread the word of Jesus.

I would've been all for having troops stationed in Iraq *if* there had been an Iraqi rebellion against Saddam. I don't imagine that would've changed the casualty rates much, though.
