It's hard to tell. It may have been frightened or in pain. Or it may have been a queen in heat. When a female cat comes into heat, it 'calls' to attract males. This can sound very distressing to our ears, like screaming in pain. This behaviour would continue for a few nights until the queen has mated or her oestrus is finished. I think this is probably what you heard.

If you weren't in sight and the cat couldn't see you it could be a call out to you to find out where you were...the cat just wanted to be near you after being stuck in the closet....

well the same thing happened to me we just moved in and our new house has a cat flap one day we made cod and it sat outside our catflap from the smell of fish we gave our fish to it and it made this high pitched scream and it sound like my sister screaming at her twin brother
we believed it hadn't had food for days so it screamed at our door to let it in so it could have our cod so it was screaming for food

sounds like the cat may be in season for mating. if it was in distress it would have tried to scratch you, bite or run away. she is just doing what all other females want to do when they are in "season".

If your cat is a female she might be looking for a mate

the cat is probably having kittens . leave her alone for a day and check on her. give food and water in the room and a litter box and leave her alone for a while. new momma cats will attack a stranger to protect their babies.

Is your cat a female? maybe she's inheat. Maybe she just wants attention. I have two male cats they never scream but they meow loud sometimes, that's their way of saying pet me, hold me, love me.

Is it in heat? Or was it spayed? I know cats make a weird howling sound when they are in heat.
Maybe it is in pain and you should go to the vet.
