Tug of war is good, biting you is bad.

Make sure you stop playing and tell her NO if she bites you

It is a myth that tug of war brings out aggression in dogs. it is just a form of play like any other. your puppy is probably biting because she is young and excited during her tug games. she hasn't learned not to mouth you yet. what you need to do before you play tug is make sure your puppy knows the rules. the rules are:

1.YOU start the game, always, not the puppy. keep a special rope toy or something that only comes out when you want to play tug.
2. she MUST drop the toy when you ask. no exceptions. (the best way to teach drop is offer her a toy. once she is tugging on it, say drop it and put a treat by her nose. when she drops the rope to get the treat, praise her. repeat. eventually you won't need to put the treat on her nose and you can just reward her once in a while when she drops it)

3. if her teeth touch your skin at anytime, in a way that hurts, say OUCH! and end the game immediately. she will learn quickly that biting people equals game over.

Dogs love to play tug, it's good excercise and it's fun for you too. Work on the rules and have fun!

No- its just fun my 20 month old working dog is a pup at heart and loves a tug of war but you couldn't get her to hurt a fly. But nonetheless be careful to educate her not to bite onto your hand just give her a tap on the nose or a sharp no if she grabs at your hand. The reason for this is that a dog must always understand it is wrong to bite any part of a person and letting her bite your hand could give her the impression that biting/rough play is acceptable, the habit may be hard to break when she is bigger, and stronger.

Interesting that people are giving the thumbs down to the first 2 answers which are correct. Not that you can't ever play tug-of-war with your dog, but it is considered an agressive behavior on your part to your dog. You are directly "fighting" your dog over a resource, a toy in this case, and any animal will attempt to defend their resources.

I would personally wait till your dog gets a little older and can better understand that this is playing and not you trying to steal it's toy.

The answer is yes, tug-of-war will bring out aggression in dogs. Biting needs to be controlled, but all puppies bite and nip until their owners teach them not to.

The best thing you can do for you and your puppy is register in a obedience class.

Tug-o-war can promote/excite aggression in dogs, yes... and the proof of the fact in your own puppy is that your puppy bites you. Biting is a form of aggression.
