Umm... because you need a new watch? Good question. As you are at higher altitudes, particularly when flying on polar routes, the increased radation from the sun has been known to have an effect on electronic devices. Some people report problems with laptops and MP3 players on the most polar of polar routes. It is also a consideration for flight attendants on these routes that they will be exposed to increased levels of solar radaition. Your watch may be feeling the effects if it is not particuliarly well shielded! Aside from that one could consider the pressure difference - but I do not feel that this is great enough to have any measurable effect on the performance of a watch.

Only reason I can think of is that the watch that has stopped working in the past is a cheap watch that hasn't been able to cope with the pressure changes of flying.

I seriously doubt an expensive watch would have any such problems, so take your D&G watch with you and don't worry. I've never had a watch have any problems with air travel.
