It's your cooling system working over time. If you are working up a good sweat but a lot of your body is covered then your face is the best place for your blood to go where it can get cooled down. Your blood pressure rises when you exert yourself which will also make your face red.
My face used to turn beetroot red when I rode a horse due to the effort that I was putting into it and I was usually dressed up to keep the cold out. These days I just go that colour digging the garden!
