Why wouldn't one? One's 'religious preference' has NOTHING to do with one's job, unless one is a 'pastor' or 'priest' ... and even a 'helping other people' job like being a fireman should rely more on the 'individual' than on what he believes in or not. I think I'd even have a 'tiny, scrawny' fireman, if he or she could pass the tests to become a fireman. I'm Catholic and my doctor is a Jew, and we are also 'friends' ... and there's NEVER an argument/disagreement between us that we can't 'talk out.'

Depends on the atheist. I would say that religious affiliation would have no bearing on whether someone would be a good firefighter or not. How exactly does a belief in a higher power help you put out a fire?

I don't see why not. I mean, I see why you might think not, that someone who didn't believe in heaven might not be as willing to risk his or her life to save others--but I'm not really convinced that's true. I mean, if you figure you're going to go someday, and you might as well make something meaningful of your life, then that's probably as strong a motivator as telling yourself you believe in a heaven you've never allowed yourself to doubt.
