The national health service is a government organisation that employs most doctors (GP's) and runs most hospitals.
It gives people in the UK free medical treatment for almost every aspect of their health needs, from minor complaints treated by oral drugs prescribed by their GP, to accident and emergency treatment, to open heart surgery.
Since it is free, many poor people in practice receive services from the NHS that are far greater than they have paid in taxes. For this reason it is seen as a pillar of the "welfare state".

My person experience of the NHS is very good. I have just come out from a week's stay in hospital, and was happy with every aspect of my treatment. All the whinging in the other posts in this question I do not understand.

Have a look at:

why does it seem that a lot of the answers are against immigrants? everybody have to wait in line the same way? If these migrants pays their taxes, they have every right to use the NHS service. But it is sad the many people are supported by the government financially, it is very sad indeed that even their homes are being paid for by the very taxes that came from each and every one of us taxpayers....

Finally to answer the question, NHS is simply the free health service offered by the government. A lot of countries doesnt have the free service, many die untreated. We are lucky to have NHS in this country

The original idea was for us to pay a certain amount of money according to what we earned > National Insurance and it would be used to pay for the medical services we all require at some time in our lives. It ensured that even the poor had access to proper medical care or those who could not afford to pay at the time did not have to wait for treatment.
Nowadays the money seems to be used to pay the growing numbers of administration staff instead of nurses and doctors and treatment goes to people who have never paid into it in the first place.Or their parents before them.
A great idea corrupted I'm afraid.

So we can spend the whole of our working lives paying to go on the longest waiting list while we watch others from overseas come and get free treatment ahead of us.

Well its ment to stop you paying £3k for a cast on your arm but it seems more interested in treating foreign people and making all of the uk wait two or three years for their treatment.

For every body but the British, a bit like the Social Security, you either don't get it or you have to wait years or fight and keep on fighting. Don't get old, you don't stand a chance of getting anything...

As far as I can see, it is mainly there to pump elderly people full of drugs to keep them out of hospital, and for treating people for their self-inflicted habits like smoking, binge-drinking and being morbidly obese. God help those of us who are genuinely ill.
