My kids have lice and I am looking for a nontraditional treatment. I don't want to use Nix, Rid, or any of those other over the counter treatments since I've read that lice are becoming resistant to them. What can I do?

Wash your hair with mayonaise. A disgusting thought but apparently it works. Also boil a fine tooth comb and closely run it through your scalp.

We also tried Nix and Rid without a lot of success. We had four separate outbreaks in one year and we were just exhausted from bagging and cleaning and vacuuming. Then we tried Lice Freeee, a product I found at Walmart. That, and checking and pinching off lice every single blessed day seemed to work. You really have to go over every inch of skin and hair, using the gel and comb between shampoos.
I was almost ready to order a product over the internet called "Not Nice to Lice" because I was ready to try anything - they have a product that is supposed to make the nits a pinkish color so you can see them better. Eww.
I have also heard of using Tea Tree Oil added to conditioner to smother the little buggers - didn't try it myself.
My husband used oil on one of my daughters, didn't work, was messy and took 5 shampoos to get the oil out. I really don't recommend that. Good Luck.

Nix and Rid still do a much better job on the lice than the prescription treatments, but are not as good as they once were against the nits. Steduc543's suggestion to follow, and be sure to get rid of them in the house (bed linens, upholstery, etc.)

u dont need to use chemicals, just keep combing with the nit comb after dousing loads of conditioner on hair, which will loosen the eggs and mean the critters cant get too much of a hold on hair so you can sweep them away too. You HAVE to do this every night for 2 weeks and you will eventually get rid of them. Good luck. is no picnic. There are some nice sprays to keep them at bay, quit nits for one, with tea trea, geranium, lavender and citronella, these are oils critters DONT LIKE. Tea trea is easiest and best rinsing hair in water with some drops tea trea in.

i have dealt with this alot. I have used an over the counter stuff called r and c it seemed to work the best. and comb comb comb... make sure you wash everything to. then every few days wash the hair with tee tree oil shampoo usually in your health food store. good luck. the r&c shampoo is very nice and conditions it at the same time.

My kids had them when they were younger and Rid was the only thing that worked. I also had to wash their sheets and pillow cases in hot water with Clorox. Use the rid again about a week later to make sure to kill the eggs that were laid.

well i know u can buy a very fine tooth comb like a "rat tail" and sit them out in the sun with a white towel on ur lap and brush them out and snap each one of them but that takes forever. one of my friends had to shave her head when she was younger but she did tell me that her parents sprayed her entire head with raid and put a plastic bag or shower cap over it. u might want to try that or like a raid bomb. it may sting a bit but they wont have lice. thats the best i've got!
