employers are supposed to give employees thier w-2s by jan. 31st; so when is the deadline for employers to turn them over to the irs/ thanks

They send to the Social Security Administration by 2/28. See below.

By February 28

File Forms 1099 and 1096. File Copy A of all Forms 1099 with Form 1096, Annual Summary and Transmittal of U.S. Information Returns, with the IRS. For electronically filed returns, see By March 31 below.

File Forms W-2 and W-3. File Copy A of all Forms W-2 with Form W-3, Transmittal of Wage and Tax Statements, with the Social Security Administration (SSA). For electronically filed returns, see By March 31 below.

February 29, 2007 per the instructions on the W-3 that gets filed with the IRS copies of the W-2's.

January 31 of each year. Anything beyond that date is subject to a penalty fee per W-2. It is sent to Social Security Administration.

Other forms, like a 1099, are due on the last day of February.
