I would thoroughly recommend Ubuntu Linux.
Mostly because it's not Microsoft and secondly because it's very user friendly.
Keep Windows if you still want to play computer games though.

Linux is scary at first and for quite some time after,

Technically Linux (Ubuntu, Suse, Red Hat etc) is more robust than Windows, However Unless your technically minded It is very difficult to understand (steep learning curve).

Windows is easier to use and is supported by more devices. (at the moment)

Linux is also lacking in software, A couple of major advantages of Linux that it is free and you have an excellent Office package Open Office 2 with a free PDF convertor (Also available in Windows)

Major bind in Linux is installing software, why dont they make it easier !!!!! it would take off then. This is a serious flaw.

Ive never heard of the Knoppix flavour to be honest so cannot comment on that. I have used Suse, Ubuntu & Red Hat

Hope this helps

Stick with Windows XP. But keep a learning Curve on Linux.
Linux I think is going to be the biggest alternative outside of MACs.
Do not try Vista at this point in time, maybe next lifetime.
Windows XP Pro is a good go, and Linux is a very promising OS

I use both Linux (Kubuntu & SUSe) and windows across my network. In all honesty, I wouldn't recommend that you upgrade to Vista for at least a year or two. This gives you the vantage point of watching as Microsoft use it's customers as guinee pigs (spelling) to figure out the bugs.

If your getting a new harddrive and using both, I would keep windows on your old one and put Linux on your new one, however you could use software such as VMware (Virtual Machine) which allows you to run almost any operating system within windows and put it as full screen, without partitioning your HDD. Worth a try

Stick with XP for now, though learning Linux will be helpful. You need to learn some about how your machine works to adminsiter Linux properly. I consider this a good thing, but some people do not want to be bothered.

Whatever you do, hold off on Vista for at least a year. It wil take it at least that long to be ready for prime time.

Kubuntu is a great one! I've been using Slackware for years and thought I'd give it a try on my laptop - I was pleasantly surprised!

But hey - there is nothing stopping you using both! Windows can't do it, but Linux can - so install Windows first. Then, when you install Linux on your free partition it will see you already have Windows installed and give you the option when you boot up. The best of both worlds!

The only cons are that you cant always download software to a linux OS from the internet, windows is much better known and if you come to sell on your computer at a later date then a windows OS will sell much better.

a pair issues to contemplate... a million. Microsoft is making XP professional obtainable to Vista shoppers for loose in the event that they have Vista homestead top classification (or above). so which you will get XP for loose which makes attempting it low risk. 2. I even have heard of a few human beings having issues looking XP drivers for Vista laptops. i could determine you have your vista disks reachable purely in case. additionally, do slightly examine previous to time to verify if the drivers are obtainable everywhere. 3. XP makes use of lots much less components than Vista, so your computing device ought to run quicker. Vista did not upload any actual function, it purely seems pretier (it is why no person is switching and it sucks lots components). This of direction potential XP will run intense-high quality and quickly on a computing device equipped for Vista. 4. you will ought to look into how workplace installs. If the entire kit (OS and workplace) are area of a device fix disk, you may not be waiting to place in it once you turn to XP. nonetheless, perhaps once you touch MS approximately switching to XP they are going to ask you if it got here with workplace and guard that for you.

I think it's best to wait till windows vista to come out. If your computer is compatible(recently bought) then it should be fine. If you want high graphics quality then go for the ultimate version of windows vista.

I'd go for the multiple boot option and try them and see which one you like and use the most over time - choosing an operating system is very subjective.
