Talk with his mother and yours. Moms usually understand the whole budget crisis the best, and they can probably help you put together something almost similar to a pot luck. If everyone can bring a dish, that would save a lot of money instantly. Try to find a place that sells mix cd's or you can make them yourself for continous music play. Go online and find a link for doit yourself invitations. Whomever is your maid of honor should be helping you with these things....Good luck and congratulations!

Why not an afternoon brunch immediately following the ceremony. Brunch tends to be a lot cheaper than a formal dinner, and must more laid back and casual - which is great if you're only going to have close family. You can probably order off the regular brunch menu for less than $20 pp - and brunch specials usually include a mimosa or bellini so you can definitely each get a drink for toasting.

Congrats... We live in SD too, and I was facing a similar dilemma when trying to plan our wedding (didn't want a formal reception, didn't want to spend too much, etc). I was thinking of calling some restaurants and just asking what the options are (to see if they have some kind of per-plate deal perhaps). We ended up doing an out-of-town wedding, and then an informal "reception" the following weekend at our house, with friends and family helping out with food and BBQ - it was a lot of fun.

That may sound like a challenge to you (and me too), but I picture a very intimate setting-whatever you do.

Most state parks have cabins you can rent at very reasonable prices. Picture this-a fire in the fireplace, surrounded by all your loved ones, sweet love songs on the cd player, and a nice home-cooked meal pulled together by the ladies (or a budget-conscious menu). Laughter, pleasant conversation and no pressure to stand to all the traditions-only the ones you choose to incorporate.

I'm sold!
