I think not too many.I smashed the walnut in a very hard surface with the palm of my hand.It works every time. I'm a not big guy,and my pressure is enough to break the dry fruit.

It depends on the type of walnut. If it's an English Walnut, those can be open quite easily. If it's a Black Walnut, get out the heavy equipment. It's recommended to place the Black Walnuts on a blacktop drive way, and run over them with your car.

I can tell you, the car method doesn't always work though. Usually I put them into a vice on my husband's workbench and crack into them that way.

Not alot I don't think...my dad used to open them by pressing them in between the heels of his hands somehow. Similar to not breaking a raw egg when you apply pressure while holdind it long ways.
