This is actually a understanding that is shared by many cultures, religions and transcends beyond the paranormal. For thousands of years many American Indian cultures believed and understood the afterlife as just 1 or 2 definite predefined places that were a result of our earthly actions. Even in the bible it mentions Hell, Heaven, limbo, pregatory and many other levels of existence after the end of our physical lives. Of course this has been translated in many different ways and everyone has their own interpretation or their own belief of what exist beyond our world. I will not go into the difference of Christianity believes or the differences on the different views. Instead I will give you what I have learned and found to be the common factor in all of the believes and thru my own personal study.
There are 7 plains of existence before you reach Heaven. True Heaven is where you would go once you are have reached a level mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Life is a continual learning process that does not end when we leave this world. We have and we will to continue to grow. I will not go into past lives and that argument. I personally believe that it is narrow minded to think that you have never been here before. I have seen too many things to believe that. I personally believe in God and I of course believe in Jesus and I do not worship Satan or anything stupid like that. ( I just want to make that clear) I am sure there will be the nut jobs who will comment he's nuts, blah,blah, blah. Just so you understand. I have studied world religion and philosophy since I was about 13. From the Tao, Hinduism, Mormon religions, Baptist, Judaism, the Koran and much more. I believe to have a true understanding you must know all that is in this world. In the end what I am telling you is the conclusion that I personally came to.
As I mention the 7 levels. Depending on where you are on all levels within yourself is where you end up at. Should the average die today. Most would end up on either 3 or 4. What does this place look like? It is the common belief that a world, society much like earth exist there as well. There is the elimination of pain and suffering. The focus is on self enlightenment and continual growth. Level 4 would be beautiful and you would think it was heaven. Your astral body would feel and look much like a physical body but without the aches and pains and physical limitations. 5 is higher state of mind and understanding and elevates from there. You should really read the teachings of St. Germain. It is all explained there. There is a book from Elizabeth Claire that describes this too. The first book that I ever read that opened my eyes to all of this was ( The way of the Peaceful Warrior) by Dan Millman. Awesome book and I think they made a movie out of it too. Good reading. Sylvia Brown touches on this too. There is too much out there to really explain in this forum everything that you would want to read about and study. As far as Sub Plains go. Well you can go up and you can go down as well. I am not sure how far they go down? I am sure -1 would be enough to seam like hell. I personally would not want to find out. You also might want to checkout the movies What dreams may come and the other one was Made in Heaven I believe? They did a good job of showing what it would like. Best of luck on your journey. Remember no matter what God and Heaven will be there and as long as you being the best person that you can be and really doing the right thing you will go where you want to go to. The answers are all around us.

I can't answer your question except to say that this is not the only level of existence ... people do speak of The Etherial Heavens... and they speak of The Astral Planes ... and that they are areas
(my father's house has many mansions) of differing quality ...... 7th Heaven is said to actually exist, according to the Hindu religion.. and so is Hell ... but, you see, the planes inter-link ... there can be heaven on earth, and hell on earth ... it depends upon how you are attuned to the universe..or universal energies.... and, beyond a certain point, we are responsible for what happens to us because we become able to navigate ... we reach a spiritual adulthood....
Who guides? Whatever you wish to call it, there is always help ... even if at first it is tenuous ... but, it can be built up with continuous attention to a goal ... Cheers!

They have to do with this dimension that we live in that has many versions. For example, the 9th plane, in Paganism, is the home of Murphy's Law running rampant. Anything that might go wrong, could go wrong and DOES go wrong. Nothing to do with the christian Satan, like the person above me believes. I at least had the audacity to read up on things instead of coming to an assumption.

Just desired to say that you will be flawed as there have been over 900 launches of missiles on the SR71 however on the time of retirement no shoot downs.
