For the love of god, never leave meat out on a counter to thaw! Or for that matter, soaking in a sink for hours and hours. Why do you think 95% of foodborne illnesses happen in the home? (Although people usually blame them on the last thing they ate, when it can be something they ate the day before. This is why restaurants get a lot of the blame. People never think it is anything they cooked)
If you want to thaw meat, the best and safest way to do it, is to thaw it in the refrigerator. Just place it on a plate in the fridge over night to thaw. It should be thawed by dinner.
You can defrost in the microwave too, but usually that ends up partially cooking the edges of the steak.

I suppose the best would be in the fridge. Although, sometimes when pressed for time we will go ahead and put a frozen one in the pan. Seems to work just fine if we keep the heat fairly low until it thaws out.

I don't bother to thaw steak. It will grill, or broil very nicely right out of the freezer!

Normal answer: I've had good luck puting them on a metal pan.
Pointy headed nerd answer: I think the metal in the pan or cookie shet quickly distributes heat (or cold) acts like a fin on a heat exchanger making the surface area larger for temperature excange to take place.

Marinate in sauce in refrigerator. It should never be left on counter to thaw. Dangerous bacteria growth. Cooking while froozen will make it tough and dry and it will not cook evenly.
