Given that amount, I would not be surprised if she did some time in jail. If she does not, she will get probation. If she is lucky enough to get probation, then she will be on probation for some time. Restitution will be paid through probation.

Bad checks are perhaps the number one crime problem in the United States. Every day, 1.3 million "bad checks" are passed, and there's no way for the law enforcement apparatus to keep up. Therefore, the U.S. has devised a rather unusual mix of criminal/civil law in this area, allowing businesses to let the person "make good" within a certain number of days (from 3-7 days) or else they are liable for up to triple the amount of the check.
So I say you friend had better pay up or make arangement to pay back the amount in a timely manner or be prepaired to go to court and then to Jail. for here is the information from most states.
Crimes are classified as felonies or misdemeanors and have a range of punishments for each type. For more information on the details, look at the Felony vs Misdemenanor Crime Punishment charts. Below is an example of how dollar amounts of the criminal act effects the classification of the crime.
Value Ladder (Theft, Criminal Mischief, Graffiti, etc.)
Dollar Amount Crime Classification
Under $20 (theft of property by check)Class C Misdemeanor
$20 - $500 (theft of property by check) Class B Misdemeanor
Under $50 Class C Misdemeanor
$50 - $500 Class B Misdemeanor
$500 - $1,500 Class A Misdemeanor
$1,500 - $20,000 State Jail Felony
$20,000 - $100,000 3rd Degree Felony
$100,000 - $200,000 2nd Degree Felony

First thing I'd like to say is your friend is an idiot. Forgery is a felony. Once you go to court and they provide the checks that were stolen and forged, and they provide the surveillance tapes of this person going into the check cashing place, and find them guilty of a Forgery. They post big signs in places like that that clearly state that you will be prosecuted. Its not a joke. Not only will they be a convicted felon, it will twice as hard to get any job, even at Mc Donald's. What a friend. With people like that who need enemies.

The old saying is if you do the crime you do the time. I am amazed that the check cashing facility has even given her the chance to make restitution. She has committed a felony and if there is any way she needs to make restitution immediately and then throw herself on the mercy of the courts. If she makes restitution she could get probation. If she does not she is looking at heavy time. Probably six months to a year, possibly more if she has had other run ins.
