cannot play back the file.the format is not surpported.Does any one now a free down load that would sort this out plz.

I had the same problem. Download the DivX codec pack and you will be all set (hopefully!) http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/codec/

You didn't state what format the file is in that you're getting the error for, but I'd agree with JackieC. The chances are it's simply a codec that's not installed on your computer.
Try the codec that JackieC suggests. Failing that, go for something like K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. (That's the one that I use, and I haven't found many files that won't play.)
