I want to purchase a Goffin Cockatoo. Any opinions or experiences good or bad? Also, are they generally noisey birds? I have gotten mixed opinions.

Goffin's are adorable, and if you are prepared for live with a parrot, then you will love it. However, if you are conserned wtih the noise level...birds may not be your thing. Especially any member of the cockatoo family. They are loud. Very, very loud. Cockatoos are also notorious for anxiety related behavior and health problems due to owner mistakes. They are often labled nuerotic or jokingly "bipolar". They need more hands on time with the owner tham most birds and will develop issues if you cannot spend HOURS of quality time daily. This is not a bird for loud families or busy families as birds will pick up on the stress of the household. Negative remarks and attitudes are picked up by these birds and manifest into plucking, screaming, aggression, wasting, and many medical issues. If you work alot, have small children, like to sleep late, can't stand noise, like to stay up late, and are unwilling to devote hundreds of dollars on toys, food, and vet care...then get a cat.

Now, if you are in a home where you can baby the new baby for the whole life of the baby...then great choice! Cockatoos want to be involved with the action, and as long as you take care to offer a safe environment, then the bird will be happy...and loud! With a lot of attention, affection, proper diet and care, Goffin's will make a great companion.

I have a Goffin cockatoo. He is loving, acts like a clown, talks good, talks in a sweet voice, loves attention,....has never plucked his feathers. I love him as I do my other 3 parrots.

They are sweet birds. Loud, but sweet. You can also try to train them not to scream. My friend trained her umbrella cockatoo not to scream by whispering to it when it screamed. I haven't heard it scream in years, so it's possible. I've generally heard more good things than bad.

If you want one, then you should get one. If you do not know whether you want one, then you should play it safe and get one of the more common kinds of pet birds. (Beware, there are many types of birds which will get you into legal problems. Make sure that you purchase your bird through a reputable dealer.)

no. they are very loud and become obsessed with their owners. They are neurotic, get stressed easily and are usually feather pickers/self-mutilators
