I have heard both so I would speak to a tax professional based on your situation. Tax laws change a lot and the last time I looked at it you could only write off books if they were for classes you were required to take for your current job that would not enable you to change careers.

Yes, but it's not worth the trouble unless you have enough other items to make it worth itemizing deductions.

no you can not use them as a tax write off...they are a personal expense, not business related nor a charity you donate to...
