I just got remarried in Aug 2006. I just realized that I have yet to change my last name on my SS card. Does that need to be done prior to filing for our taxes this year?

No, but you will use your old name (whatever is on your social security card) on your tax return.

No it does not, however make certain that you fill out your name on your return EXACTLY how it appears on your SS card. If the name on the 1040 doesn't match the name on your SS card your return will be rejected and you will have to resubmit it. Wait until you get your return, then change your SS card to your married name.

Yes. The name on your tax return must match the name on the SS records or your return will be rejected.

Yes you need to do this asap. I didn't do it for a long time after I was married and it took a long time to get it straightened out. I don't understand the problem but the IRS is very picky about things like that. I suppose these days there is so much name fraud going on that you need to be very careful.

It depends on whether or not you changed your name on your paychecks. Your social security number is supposed to match your W-2 name.

If you go to the SSA now, it only takes a couple weeks for the change to happen.

Have fun.

It is not necessary. I would get it done someday especially if you are planning to get a passport.
