Last year, I went to a birthday party for my uncle at Marchi's, 251 East 31st Street. The restaurant (which has been there forever - I remember going there when I was about twelve years old) is in a lovely old brownstone. There is no menu - there are five or six courses - everything is served family style - huge platters of food (see the menu below). There were 20 of us - no karaoke, no pool, but we had a private room. There was no charge for the separate room and I think it cost $40 or $45 per person (this was almost a year ago, so you'd have to double check the price). I don't know if the wine was included or if it was extra. Everyone was very pleasant and we had a good time. (I think they have more than one private room to accomodate different size parties.

You can usually rent a small conference room at any of the major hotels that will hold 10-15 people for about $150.00 for a few hours; If you use their in-house catering (which might be mandatory, by the way) figure on anywhere from $20-$100+ per person plus the cost of a private bartender and booze...why don't you check with some churches...they may have a room for a few hours that you can make a small donation to the church for it's use and bring the food/drinks yourself...good luck! That's kind of like asking where can I get a fantastic bottle of Champagne for under $10.00...

You can try a restaurant called City Hall, which is obviously downtown. It is on Duane Street off of West Broadway. They have 2 private rooms, one of them would work for 40 or less people, and this I know because we have rented it for my birthday in a few weeks for 20 people. It is a very classy place, no Karoke, sorry, can't help you with that kind of thing.
This restaurant will give you a fixed menu, or several things for everyone to chose from, and the food is fantastic. In fact, we used the restaurant for our re-marriage ceremony 2 years ago and have been going back many times, as have been many of our guests.

Ruth's Chris Steak House (Upper West Side) has the Library Room. I've eaten there many times - they have great steaks and a very well rounded menu if some aren't into it. I had my bachelor party there and it was excellent.
