My hair right now is a medium red. What at-home coloring brand should I try? Every time I try to dye it blonde, it works for about a day or two and then it fades back to it's original color. I can't afford to go to the salon, so don't even bother telling me that.

It will have to be bleached first, then dyed. Yo can't go from red straight to blonde without making it orange.

To achieve a lighter color of your hair, you always need to bleach it rather than use the colorations with trendy names like "platin blond", Savannah blond", you name it - these can lighten hair only up to one nuance or two. You say your hair is "now" a medium red - I guess that means it's already been dyed which always makes it harder to change the color, especially to a lighter one. You will definately need a strong bleach.
As for brands, I don't know where you live so I can't really give you an advise there, I live in Germany and once used bleach by Schwarzkopf, don't know if they sell it there...
You should always use a good conditioner when you bleach your hair as it will easily split otherwise.

I have black hair and up until about 3 month ago it was platinum blonde. The truth of the matter is when your color is as vibrant and strong as ours is you need to start off gradually. You can find a good descent salon in your area to do highlights and then every time you go back for your roots ask her/him to go lighter all over until at some point you will look like you have blonde hair with red streaks. If you try to do it at home you are going to ruin your hair, have tons of breakage and it will end up looking like poo. Call some salons up, most will let you come in, look at your hair, tell you what they can do for you and give you a price quote.

i did that one time, you get a bleach kit, and then after you bleach it, dye it an ash blonde. the ash blonde is very important because it takes away red tones.

here's what i used and it turned out great, i had auburn hair before i did this.

Sorry, but I believe that there's no other way...
Visit a salon.
Professionals will help you better.
Every time my mother tries to dye her hair alone, she regrets it!
Good luck!
