There are lots of things it could be. Both fatigue and bruising can be the direct result of not eating, so it could be a GI thing. It could also be a psychological thing, such as childhood depression (which could cause the tiredness and loss of appetite, and the lack of eating could cause the bruising). It could also be anemia, which is often easily treatable with iron suppliments. It could be any one of a number of vitamine deficiencies, which are very easily treatable. There are also a number of inhereted metabolic disorders that could cause these symptoms. Leukemia is only one of many possible causes of the symptoms you described, and probably not even the most likely possibility.

No matter what, you should take him to a doctor ASAP.

This is a very difficult situation to be in. I feel for you. I have only seen two dogs go through chemo and to be honest they did not seem bothered by it unlike what we humans go through. Both pulled through and one of them lived for a further 5 years. Don't know about the other one as I left that practice shortly after. Obviously there are different types of chemo so it may depend on which was used but if I had a dog that was still happy and active I would certainly give at least one or two doses a try to see how the dog coped. 8 years is not that old and if it gives them another couple of years together I would like to offer that chance. If on the other had your dog reacts badly with the chemo then I think you should sit down with your son and discuss how ill the dog now is. Perhaps agree on a sign that if the dog starts doing 'this' then it is the time to say goodbye. Remind him that his friend would like to know that the best is being done for his dog and that he would not like to see him going through any pain if there was an alternative. He would also be returning to him if that is the kind of belief you follow. Good luck with whatever decision you make together.
