Generally I think it's because "skinny" is seen as a positive thing in our society and "fat" is seen as negative. I know my niece, who is quite thin, has had trouble with this and really gets upset when people call her skinny. - - It doesn't bother me, because nobody will ever call me skinny! :^)

To me it was very offensive when I was younger. I was so thin that some people thought I had an eating disorder and other people asked me how I stay so thin. Once I had kids, I gained a little weight and a got a few curves.
It's really better to say something like "gee, you look great" instead of the skinny remark. It's more of a compliment.

As a skinny person I gotta tell you that I hate it when people call me skinny, I find it as offensive as if someone called me ugly or fat. I've even been acused of being anorexic and I hate that because I've never dieted in my life and I eat junk food like crazy. I just happen to be naturally skinny.

I believe everything is relative. Whom do you consider "ideal"? I would say either way, be it skinny or obese, one should not be talking about it, be it in appreciation or otherwise. Even constructive criticism is a big no no for me. Don't people have mirrors in their houses? Can they not see themselves and judge for themselves? why should any other person go to them and tell them what they are?
Personally, it does not bother me if people say something to me about my body. I just do not care. If they like me fine, if they don't good for them.
I take a lot of care to see that I do not comment on anybody's body structure even if I think that it is a very positive and a wonderful compliment, you never know they may not take it in the same sense.

you can hurt alot of people's feelings if you call them fat, but hardly anyone is hurt by being called skinny. everyone wants to be skinny or at a healthy weight. thats why there are all those eating disorders and image complexes, diets and so forth.

don't bother me at all, call them skinny, call them fat, makes no difference to me, I don't know them. Skinny is positive in society. fat is very negative. Them skinny runts would never make it in the south pacific where fat is considered to be a social gift.

Oh I agree completely!!!!!! MOF, I'll share.. lol
My mom sufferes from Chrones disease, its a very painful disease and one of the side effects is low weight gain. She tries and tries but cannot gain weight to save her life, she has to take meds to gain weight. Now you can imagine how many Oh your so skinny comments she gets and each one is a slap in the face. Now, whenever she gets a comment like that she does reply with..And you're so fat!!!!

becuase skinny girls are sexy and doesnt take up room, ok look at this, wouldnt you rather your house be less cluttered (skinny) or cluttred (fat) most people say less cluttred and also you can hug skinny girls and they have abs and big girl have rolls. if you are big, no offense but try jenny craig or eat more fiber and water.
