my son turned four in october and i was just wondering what is reasonable to teach him at this age. i don't want to push things on him that he's not ready for but i don't want to short change him either. he is a very bright kid and is very eager to learn (like most four year olds probably) and i want to spend more quality time teaching him things. to be exact how high should he be able to count? and should he be writing his name?

For talking he should know this:
Uses sentences of six or more words
• Speaks well enough for strangers to understand
• Starts to use "s" on verbs to show present tense ("he runs")
For separation and independence:
Develops friendships independent of you — at preschool, for instance
• Plays with other children, instead of just side by side
For self care:
Uses a spoon and fork like an adult
• Masters toilet training
• Brushes teeth (he will still need your help and supervision)
For toilet training:
Uses an adult toilet
• Stays dry most nights
• Boys switch from sitting to standing
Most 4 year olds can count to 10 and some cannot. My son can count to 30. It is all about memorization and practice. The more time you spend teaching him things he is interested in, the more he will remember. A child as young as 3 can write their name because they are taught how.
I would read to him alot and teach him the sounds of the alphabet. Show him how to sound out words in a book, play music and sing etc.
Work on his fine motor skill by getting him to use the pencil and gripping it with 3 fingers. Bring out children's scissors too so that he can practice cutting.
Most of all, enjoy it and make sure he is having fun. Quality time counts for everything especially in the early years.

I run a home daycare and or preschool and i've got about 5 4year olds.

I really don't know..... but all of my four year olds can count to ten because when they reach kindergarden thats what they need to know. He needs to memorize his alphabet

but don't rush him like one week do the letters A B and C and the numbers 1 2 and 3. Then the next week do the letters D E and F and the numbers 4 5 and 6.

and before long he'll be ready for kindergarden.

Calm down and just teach him the basics!!! =)

All kids develop differently. Just start teaching him things he needs to know. He will learn whatever is taught. My daughter knew her address, home phone number, could count to 25 without help, knew her alphabet by sight, knew all her colors and shapes, could tie her shoes, and read short words and write her first name. They are little sponges at this age and can literally learn anything you are willing to teach. She taught herself a lot of things too.
My son can count to 20, knows his alphabet by site, has started to write his name, knows all of his colors and most of his shapes, he's still learning his address and phone number. He can't tie his shoes yet, but I'm not worried about that since most shoes come with zippers or velcro anyway. He can play most video games better than his older brother (he's 12). I'm not talking about the mindless ones, he figures out the ones you need to think to know how finish. He even shows me how to do them sometimes. And his eye hand coordination is excellent for his age, it always has been. He turned 4 in November.
They are all unique.

There must be a series off and his sister may be bothering him too yet he desires to understand he has to apply his words to precise his anger. ensure you tell him getting indignant and mad is okay, he purely desires to cope with it in any different case. tell him if he might desire to hit something while he's mad he can hit his pillow yet he's not allowed to hit something. additionally, make beneficial he's conscious that something he likes to do (I get rid of television) would be taken away for something of the day if he does hit. beneficial reinforcement facilitates too, as an occasion, if he is going the finished day without showing any aggressive habit he gets some M&Ms earlier bedtime. Making him wait a week for his reward will not paintings with a newborn this youthful, the reward might desire to experience accessible to the newborn. sturdy success and don't supply up attempting to alter his habit that would take it sluggish to the terrific option yet is correctable in case you reside frim and consistant.
