Maybe you need to reflect on why you end up feeling sick and faint and why you are putting yourself through that. If you go ahead I would talk to the artist doing it first. firstly they need to know how you might react, pretty dangerous if you just pass out and fall off the chair! They can do big tattoos in stages, maybe doing all the outline in one sitting etc. There is also a numbing cream some use that they put on hours before. Think its the same stuff hospitals use prior to anaesthetics, they put the cream on the area under clingfilm so that it numbs the skin. Doesn't stop all the pain but makes it less. You can also take some painkillers prior to it or herbal calming remedies. If you are worried more likely to cause nausea, need to try and eat first and think of things that help you remain calm in other situations. Main thing is to discuss it and be 100% sure its what you want to do. If it is just keep telling yourself "no pain no gain", once its done its done! Good luck must be some tattoo to take 3 hours.

Don't have anything too sugary before the tattooing!

The pain is something that you will have to put up with BUT if the tattooist is a good one , he will keep asking if you are OK.
He may even suggest a small break part way through.
You can always see about having the work done over a couple of sittings if it proves too much.
The pain is initially quite sharp but it settles into a sting after a while.
Try to stay relaxed throughout, tensing makes it worse.
NEVER use any creams designed to kill pain on an area about to have a tattoo!! This may cause unforeseen results! (Like pink instead of black for instance) You haven't said where the tatt is going to be, inside the upper arm and the lower part of the back are by far the most painful.
I've seen BIG hairy bikers 'flake' during a tattoo session so don't be embarrassed!

For aftercare of the tattoo, make sure you have loads of Savlon, it helps with healing, pain and doesn't take any of the vibrancy of the colours away!

Failing all that, forget the tatt and take your partner out for a meal :~}

Before each of my tattoos except for my first (I got light headed that time) I would have a mountain dew and and some subway chocolate chip cookies (only because subway is right across from the tattoo parlour) and I've been fine for all of the rest.

Hope this helps hun, good luck!

Yr brave!
I had my 1st tattoo last week & passed out, only to come round & spew all over the floor.
I was so ashamed
Best thing to do is ask the tattooist if you can have a break!
& try to think of something else while he's working on you.
Not much help I'm afraid but the best I could do

3 hours isn't that long...I've sat though a 5 hour tattoo with no breaks, yes it heart but it was well worth it...take a book with you or somebody that you can talk to, that should keep you mind off the pain. Don't eat a lot before you go it will just upset you stomach and you'll want to up chuck...a little hint, don't drink any coffee for about 24 hours before you go it will thin out your blood and you'll bleed more...
good luck...hope you make it through it OK

honestly a three hour tattoo won't be THAT huge. now it could be but it probably won't be. good luck! have had quite a few hours of tattoo done and it is definitely bearable. just be sure to eat a good lunch and relax. bring along a friend if you can to talk to you.
good luck!!

also don't worry about being nauseated. if you feel sick just let them know and you can take a break and get some fresh air. but my tattoo artist said he has had a lot of people throw up, pass out or cry so i guess they're used to it.

Just make sure you eat a little something and take a soda or something to drink about halfway (the artist will need to take a break or two anyway). Any painkillers you take culd thin your blood and make the tattoo not "take" as well, though, so you should probably stay away from them. Tell your artist that you felt faint last time you got one, so he or she knows to watch out for that.

Hahahha you sound like those places make you a little more than nervous :p Don't worry. Eat something solid before you go in. If you're really really nervous when you get in there, you can always wait until you're more comfy with it. Better than that, just take a couple of deep breaths and sorta gather yourself when you get in there. You'll be fine. They have people pass out on them all the time. They'll take good care of you if that happens :)

I agree with the people who say don't eat b4. No caffeine, no pain relievers, they do thin the blood. Thin blood is bad for a good tattoo. Breathing is what you need to remember. When you hold your breath through pain it just tenses your muscles even more therefore more pain. Deep breathing, slow steady breathing and bring a friend they do help with keeping you distracted. If you can't bring a friend bring an ipod, it will help block out the sound if that ads to your anxiety. Good luck.
