Some airlines will not let you fly unless you have at least 6 months on your passport. It does not seem to cut any ice that we have free travel within the EU as Britain has not signed up to that part of the EU law. So get yourself an up to date passport quick.

You can travel to France on an unexpired British passport regardless of how much time is left before expiry.
You can also renew your passport up to 9 months prior to expiry. The unexpired time will be added to the new passport.
